Lot Essay

The pendant, A Study of Trees also in the Woodner Collection, was exhibited in New York, Metropolitan Museum of Art, Master Drawings from the Woodner Collection, 1990, no. 87. It belongs to a group of similar drawings dated by Carlos van Hasselt to the 1640s. A similar sheet in the Steiner Collection is a preparatory study for the trees in the background of David Teniers the Younger's Landscape with Piper and Villagers before Cottages, New Haven, Yale University Art Gallery, Old Master Drawings from the Collection of John and Alice Steiner, 1986, under no. 89, illustrated. Other similar drawings are in the Lugt Collection, Paris, the Fitzwilliam Museum, Cambridge, the Kunsthalle, Hamburg, and the Pierpont Morgan Library, New York
