Lot Essay

The Dalhousie album contained a notable series of small studies by Maes, many of which are connected with pictures of the 1650s. This drawing, as Valentiner observed, is a study for the picture of the subject dated 1655 in the National Gallery, no. 159. A further study, closer to the picture, in the Lugt Collection, was also in the Dalhousie album, Sumowski, no. 1772.

Felice Stampfle suggests that the model used in the two drawings served also for a study in the Pierpont Morgan Library, loc. cit.
