Lot Essay

The fine penstrokes and sparse modelling of the first drawing resemble a drawing of the first Roman period of 1633-9 in the Louvre, F. Viatte, Dessins de Stefano della Bella, 1610-1664, Paris, 1974, no. 86, illustrated. The study after Parmigianino is related to a chalk drawing, probably an offset, in the Earl of Crawford and Balcarres's collection, A.E. Popham, Catalogue of the Drawings of Parmigianino, New Haven and London, 1971, no. 686, pl. 419
