Lot Essay

The sitter is traditionally identified as Elisabetta Farnese (1699-1766), who in 1714 married King Philip V of Spain. The ermine trimmed robe and fleur-de-lys confirm her high rank and connection with the house of France. A date in the 1720s seems likely. It should be emphasised that other ostensibly royal portraits by Rosalba are difficult to identify for example that of a princess formerly at Dresden, B. Sani, Rosalba Carriera, Turin, 1988, no. 139, pl.114
