Lot Essay

Helen Allingham moved to Sandhills, near Witley in 1881. The sandhills gave the area and the Allingham's house their name. The cottage at the top was inhabited by John Hardy, who was employed as the Allingham's gardener and daughter-in-law Ada, who stands in front holding her baby son, Ernest. The cottage is still inhabited by members of the Hardy family today, but although the yew tree still remains the sandpit is overgrown
