Furnishing style at this time was popularised by Thomas Sheraton's The Cabinet Directory, London, 1803 and Thomas Hope's Household Furniture and Interior Decoration, London 1807. Here the clock is designed in the 'antique' or 'Etruscan' manner influenced by C. H. Tatham (d.1842), architect and author of Etchings of... Ancient Ornamental Architecture, 1799. The lions are depicted reposing at an altar and representing the triumph of good over evil, they were taken by Tatham from the Aqua Felice fountain, Rome, and illustrated in the 'Etchings'. Jupiter's bolt-bearing eagle is taken from a model by the Parisien ciseleur-doreur Pierre-Maximilien Delafontaine (d.1860)
Benjamin Vulliamy (1747-1811), son of Justin Vulliamy (d.ca.1790). It was Benjamin Vulliamy who started the clock numbering system although precisely when is not known. His most famous piece must be the regulator with Harrison's grasshopper escapement made for George III to go in his observatory in the Mural Quadrant Room at Richmond and now housed in the British Museum
