Lot Essay
The original for this commode was a piece supplied by Stöckel for the Comte de Provence and subsequently altered twice by Beneman for Marie-Antoinette in 1786, firstly for her bedchamber and secondly for her Salon des Jeux, both at Fontainbleu (F.J.B. Watson, Louis XVI Furniture, 1960, fig. 45). It is now in the Musée du Louvre, Paris.
