'Abdullah Tabbakh of Herat was especially known for his thuluth calligraphy. He designed the calligraphy for a number of buildings; those founded by Gauhar Shad Begum, wife of Shah Rukh being of particular note. He founded a school of calligraphy in Herat and numbered among his pupils 'Abd al-Haqq and Shaykh Kamal Shabzavari, the father of the artist Shaykh Muhammad.
