Lot Essay

This picture is sold with a photocopy of a certificate by Dr. Walther Bernt, dated August 1977. Both he and Professor Stechow (loc. cit.) give the date of the painting as 1654. Stechow (loc. cit.) suspected that numbers 373C and 411 in his monograph were the same picture and he confirmed this in a letter of 12 February 1973.
