INDENTMiss Nellie Hozier, later Mrs Bertram Romilly (1888-1955), sister of Clementine Churchill nee Hozier, joined the small private ambulance unit formed by Angela Manners at the outbreak of the Great War, 1914. The ambulance comprising one surgeon, six nurses and Miss Hozier as Secretary and Interpreter arrived in Brussels, August, 1914 and moved on before the enemy advance. Captured by the Germans during the British withdrawal, the unit was allowed to nurse captured British wounded. On one occasion they obtained a permit from the Germans for a mercy visit to Mons by freely using the name of Miss Hozier's brother-in-law Mr Winston Churchill. The refusal by the unit to attend to German wounded led to their repatriation to England via Norway (for further information refer to the biography of Clementine Churchill by Mary Soames)
