(c) JAPAN, Order of the Rising Sun, Second Class set of insignia, Badge, 79 x 54 mm., silver-gilt and enamel; Star, 90 mm., silver, silver-gilt and enamel, both pieces with central red cabochon centres, the set good very fine in its gold and black laquer case of issue, together with large photograph of recipient in uniform and two documents relating to the Japanese Order (4)

INDENTAdmiral Swinton Colthurst Holland, F.R.G.S. (1844-1922), entered the Royal Navy as Naval Cadet, 1857; Sub-Lieutenant 1863, Lieutenant 1865; Inventor of the flashing signal lamp powered from oil or electricity and used in small craft and torpedo boats; received the Naval College prize for Steam and Naval Achitecture, 1885; A.D.C. to Queen Victoria, 1895; Commodore 2nd. Class and Naval Officer in Charge, Hong Kong, July, 1896; Rear Admiral 1899; Admiral Superintendent, Chatham Dockyard, 1899; Vice-Admiral, 1903; Admiral, 1907 and retired the following year; was sometime Captain of the Royal Yacht
