Lot Essay

We are grateful to Dr. Erich Schleier for confirming that this is an early work by the artist, datable c. 1606-7 and loosely based on Raphael's Madonna del Passeggio, once in the collection of Queen Christina of Sweden in Rome and now on loan from the Duke of Sutherland's collection to the National Gallery of Scotland.

A smaller, second version was sold at Sotheby's, New York, 15 Jan. 1993, lot 145, as 'Attributed to Sisto Badalocchio' ($14,950).
