THE PROPERTY OF A GENTLEMAN Lots 50-55 and 66 are taken from an album of watercolours, the majority of Cape and Indian interest compiled by General Sir Abraham Josias Cloete. Abraham Josias Cloete was a descendant of Jacob Cloete of Cologne, one of the earliest Europeans to settle in the Cape, arriving in 1652. A.J. Cloete (1794-1886) was the first of the Cloete family to enter the British army and served with his regiment in India in 1817-19. It may be assumed that he first met Sir Charles D'Oyly (lots 51, 66 and 67) in Calcutta at this time
