The present picture will be published in the forthcoming monograph on the work of Hondius being prepared by Professor Roland Fleischer; he dates it to the 1670s. Hondius moved to England in 1664, remaining here until his death in London in 1691. Professor Fleischer has pointed out that bear-baiting was very popular in England at the time, as the diaries of John Evelyn and other contemporary documents attest.
