Lot Essay
Lots 8 and 9 are closely related, each showing the same stretch of road on Woking Common. The times of day, however, differ dramatically, while in the evening view Hulme introduces a large group of trees on the right and others to break up the horizon to the left. The figures also vary, although the motif of carrying a bundle is repeated and the dogs in each picture are identical.
Hulme was particularly attracted to this area in the late 1850s, showing Near Woking, Surrey at the R.A. in 1858 (no.201) and Near the Common, Woking, Surrey the following year (no.148).
