Lot Essay

The picture is closely related to A Study: Maidens picking Flowers by a Stream, c.1911 (Hobson, op.cit., p.135. pl.136; J.W. Waterhouse, 1989, pl.74). A pencil sketch, slightly closer to the present picture than to Maidens picking Flowers, was sold in these Rooms 8 February 1991, lot 12, repr. in cat.
