This attractive example of Boughton's portraiture dates from about 1890. Esme Robb and her sister Katherine were favourite models of the artist; he showed a double portrait of them at the Royal Academy in 1896, and one of Katherine alone in 1898. In fact he was later to marry Katherine, making Esme his sister-in-law.
