Lot Essay

The relevant entry in Pyne's 'Picture Memoranda' reads 'E.(?) G. Muller 1818. Repainted on extensively for Mr Mendoza'. The first phrase is hard to interpret but Mendoza was one of Pyne's most important patrons at this date, or possibly even his dealer. He seems to have acquired eight works in all, beginning with no.642 (The Port Town of Luino) and ending with the present picture. Most were Italian subjects.

The picture was the first and largest of three comparable views that Pyne painted about this time, being followed by no.670, Zurich-Water (23 x 33in.) and no.672, The Lake of Zurich (24 x 33in.)
