Lot Essay

This watercolour was no doubt made when Crane was returning from a holiday in Bayreath in the Summer of 1894. 'Crossing from Ostend to Dover, and thence lingering at Canterbury, we finished our holiday in the quiet cathedral city with its many architectural beauties and rich historic associations' (Walter Crane, An Artist's Reminiscences, 1907, p. 426)
