An inscription on a label on the stretcher reads 'Self Portrait of Annibale Carracci 1560-1609 repaired and identified by Herbert Walker 1944'.

The present attribution has been suggested by Dr. Stephen Pepper by comparison with the pictures exhibited at Modena, L'arte degli Estensi, June-Sept. 1986, pp.99-101
