AN IMPORTANT RANGE OF HOSPICES BURGUNDY VINTAGES 1983 TO 1989 These wines were all purchased at the relevant Hospices de Beaune and Hospices de Nuits auctions by Emile Bäggli, a well known and respected Zurich wine merchant and restaurateur. The bottles bear his seal on the shoulder and name around the base and were all bottled by Michel Rossignol in Volnay. They have been cellared in Volnay since purchase and have now been shipped to London for this sale and are lying in-bond at Trapps Cellars, S.E.1 but will be offered duty-paid as is Christie's normal method. There will be samples of each wine at the pre-sale tasting and further samples are available should trade buyers or restaurants be interested in sampling the wines at another time. The Hospices sales take place each November (Beaune) and April (Nuits) as charitable events in aid of local institutions for the sick, the elderly and orphans. Now a great tradition taking place each year following the vintage, the Hospices de Beaune sales commenced in 1851. The wines come from 58 hectares of vines, donated to the Hospices, and spread over the Côte de Beaune, with one vineyard in Mazis-Chambertin, donated in 1977. Reflecting to some degree the reputation of the vintage, prices, bearing in mind it is a charitable event, often soar to great heights. The offering in today's sale is unique in size and gives an unparalled opportunity to buy the wines at more approachable levels For illustration of the bottles and details of labels see page Now lying London, S.E.1 Offered duty-paid, but available in bond
