A similar work 'Through the Window' was painted at Holt End, the home of Gertler's friend, Thomas Balston, and was completed on 28 July 1937. Gertler wrote in his notebook on 29 July of another landscape he had just begun: 'proportions, tone and colour ... a sort of rich Sickert - somewhere between Sickert and Renoir'
