Lot Essay

Sketch book 58 in the Pissarro Family Archive at the Ashmolean Museum, Oxford contains six studies related to the right hand side of the painting. A. Thorold (loc. cit.) mentions a letter from James Brown to Lucien Pissarro, also in the Pissarro Archive at the Ashmolean Museum, which says: 'I went up to the Brook on Sunday and saw the pictures....They are fine and at least up to the level of other recent work. I liked best 1)The Pond...2)Rabbit Hill with wall in the foreground....all this work strongly confirms the impression I already have about your status as a painter'
