Lot Essay
In later years the stark seascapes became a more popular subject for the artist. Mervyn Levy in writing of a contemporary work 'Grey Sea' 1966 comments: 'Earlier as in the Lytham scenes, or the beach pictures, the water is pleasantly set with yachts and boats. But there seems to be no doubt that in the last years of his life, the sea ceased to represent holidays, or summer-time, and came to symbolise a dimension of experience yet to reveal its mysteries. Indeed the artist's imagery, always subtle, often contains profound double meanings. Things are usually more than they might seem at first sight.'
