Kinza, a gold coin mint, has been in the hands of the Goto Family, commissioned by the Tokugawa Shogunate from the beginning of Edo Period until 1869, when the new Mint Bureau, Zohei-kyoku, was established by the Meiji Govenment. In 1698 the site was moved from Hongo to Nihonbashi, and is now occupied by the Bank of Japan. This scroll clearly depicts the scenes of the manufacture of koban, literally meaning 'small coins'; the minting of oban, large coins, was under the control of another branch of Goto Family, initially in Kyoto at Oban-dokoro. The oban was not in common use, being reserved mainly for use as a prize or gift
