Nonomura Seiemon Ninsei (1574-1660) was both a painter and a potter and was, with Kenzan and Mokubei, considered one of the "Three Great Potters of Kyoto"; after making wares for the tea-ceremony he turned to pottery decorated with bright enamels and gold and silver, a striking style which reflected the richness of the Momoyama period. Although this became the ideal of Kyoto potters it must be admitted that in less able hands it was gradually transformed into the florid yet very popular Satsuma ware.
