Lot Essay
The following eight lots, hitherto unrecorded were formerly either mounted in a notebook or part of a sketchbook inscribed by the artist ... and, as occurs in other cases, numbered by him, in this case '31'. They are particularly important in that six of them seem to provide the first evidence that Towne visited Durham and Edinburgh.
Each drawing is individually signed and inscribed with the locations and exact date, showing that Towne was in Durham from 7 August 1811 and in Edinburgh and its neighbourhood from 13 August. By September he had returned to his home in London, from where he visited Windsor.
All the drawings are executed on [sketchbook] paper measuring 6¾ x 10in. (172 x 254mm.) though in some cases, typically for this artist, a particularly wide landscape format has been created by joining two sheets together end to end, making a total size of 6¾ x 20in. (172 x 511mm.) Towne did not necessarily do the colouring on the spot, so the inscribed dated may only apply to the pencilled underdrawing
