Moving the Windmill 'Jill'

extensively inscribed and the inscription transcribed on to the mount 'This Mill was drawn on the 28th March 1797/2 miles by 86 oxen which belonged to the following gentlemen/W. Stanford Esq. Mr Hodson, Mr Hamstar (?), Mr Scrase, Mr Trill, Mr Hall, Mr Hardwick/Mr J Hodson' 'The destination was two miles Inland'; pencil and watercolour with touches of white heightening and gum arabic

Lot Essay

A later inscription on the mount and the reverse of the mount by a Mr A.W.J. Fuller reads 'The Windmill "Jill" moved from Dyke Road, Brighton. two miles to Clayton Down, south of Clayton Village, as/a companion to "Jack", on the 28th March 1797 ... a very interesting contemporary drawing and record of 'Jill' which still/stands, together with 'Jack'in good preservaton A.W.J.F. Septr 1940'
