Lot Essay

A study for this composition was sold at Sotheby's, 7 July 1983, lot 112 (repr.). Raymond Lister dates this watercolour to circa 1851. Palmer executed a number of drawings based on the subject of sheep resting. Lister suggests that the drawing shows the Surrey Downs overlooking the Weald
