The published Naval General Service Medal rolls confirm H.D. Twysden as a Midshipman aboard the Hussar for the operations leading to the capture of Java in September 1811.

Captain Henry Duncan Twysden entered the Royal Navy as a First Class Volunteer aboard the Donegal in February 1809, in which ship he witnessed the attack made by Lord Cochrane on the French Fleet in Aix Roads, and was present, as a Midshipman, in November 1810, in an attempt to destroy the French Frigates Amazone and Elize under the fire of the enemy's Batteries near Cherbourg. In June 1811, he removed to the Hussar, and in her participated in the Java operations. Twysden was advanced to Lieutenant in May 1813 and for the remainder of his service afloat, in a number of ships, served on the Mediterranean, Home, Jamaica and Halifax Stations. Advanced to Commander in June 1838, he next served as an Inspecting Commander of the Coast Guard from July 1839 to July 1845, at some stage thereafter being placed on the Retired List. Under the Queen's Orders in Council of June 1851 and January 1856, he subsequently gained final advancement to Captain.
