Lot Essay

The published Naval General Service Medal rolls confirm George 'Andrew' as an Ordinary Seaman aboard the Prince George for the Battle of Cape St. Vincent on 14.2.1797, and as an Able Seaman aboard the Orion for the Battle of Trafalgar on 21.10.1805. He is the only George Andrew or Andrews on the entire roll.

'In May 1805 she [the Orion] was commissioned by Captain Edward Codrington, and was employed in the blockade of Cadiz by Collingwood. In the Weather Column she took part in the great victory at Trafalgar on 21 October 1805. She fought the French 74, Intrepide, which she forced in quarter of an hour to haul down her Colours, and assisted in the submission of the French Swiftsure. Her losses amounted to 24 killed and wounded; she had several spars injured, and her main-topsail yard shot away' (The Trafalgar Roll, by Colonel Robert Mackenzie, refers).
