The published Naval General Service Medal rolls confirm John Smart as a Captain's Servant aboard the Nymphe for the action of 18.6.1793, one of just four recipients of this clasp on the Admiralty roll.

For only the second Naval General Service Medal action of the series, in which the 36-gun Frigate Nymphe fought a 'furious' engagement with the French 36-gun Frigate Cleopatra off Cornwall, Captain Edward Pellew of the former ship eventually boarding and capturing his opponent for the loss of 23 killed and 27 wounded.
