The published Naval General Service Medal rolls confirm Edward Smith as a Private in the Royal Marines aboard the Success for the Boat Service action of 9.6.1799, one of just four recipients of this clasp on the Admiralty roll. One other man with these names was awarded the Medal with the 'Syria' clasp.
