Private Edward Jones fought at the Battle of Blaauwberg on 8.1.1806, the victory against the Dutch that sealed the British re-occupation of the Cape of Good Hope. No clasps were awarded to the Military General Service Medal for the Battle or re-occupation and it is consequently unusual to find a Medal to a recipient associated with this important episode in the Cape's history. Jones had been born in Shrewsbury, circa 1784 and had enlisted in the 59th Foot in April 1805. He served with the Regiment, including the Java operations, until discharged in July 1825.
