Lot Essay

Captain Joseph Hill was appointed to a Lieutenancy in the 69th (South Lincolnshire) Regiment of Foot in February 1814 and, following participation in the Waterloo Campaign, was placed on the Retired List in 1835.

'Section after section of the 69th was swept off by the enemy's Artillery at Waterloo, whilst the French Cavalry repeatedly surrounded the devoted Regiment; but whenever the smoke cleared off, there it stood firm and undaunted' (Dalton's Waterloo Roll refers).
