Private Michael Campy was born in the Parish of St. Martin, Beverley, Yorkshire and originally enlisted in the 81st Regiment at Birmingham in July 1843, aged 17 years. Sometime thereafter transferring to the 61st Regiment, he was present at the passage of the Chenab and in the pursuit of the enemy to the Khyber Pass, in addition to the Battles of Chilianwala and Goojerat. Campy also appears to have served in the Kohat Expedition under Sir Colin Campbell.
