Lot Essay

Lieutenant-Colonel Alfred Herbert Randolph was born in September 1855 and was commissioned into the Royal Engineers in August 1875. During the Second Afghan War he served with No. 3 Company of the Bengal Sappers and Miners in both Campaigns, firstly with the 1st Division, Peshawar Valley Field Force, and secondly with the Khyber Brigade at Landi Kotal. Advanced to Captain in August 1886 and to Major in January 1895, Beck was placed on the Reserve of Officers in June 1899. His advancement to half-Colonel was confirmed in October 1902.
