Lot Essay

Sub. Lieutenant John Alfred Langford, a native of Leyton, Essex, first entered the French Theatre of War as a Gunner in the (6th London) Royal Field Artillery in March 1915. Subsequently commissioned into the "Wavy Navy" as a Sub. Lieutenant in the Royal Naval Division, he was killed in action on the Somme on 13.11.1916, while serving with the Drake Battalion. He is buried in the Hamel Military Cemetery, Beaumont-Hamel, France.

Lieutenant Harold Langford, a brother of John Alfred, first entered the French Theatre of War as a Gunner in the Royal Field Artillery in March 1915. Commissioned into the "Wavy Navy" in October of the same year, he, too, served in the Royal Naval Division.
