Lot Essay

Private Francis Augustus Mutum was killed in action on the 'First Day of the Somme' on 1.7.1916, while serving with the 8th Battalion, Norfolk Regiment. Mustered just north of Carnoy for the attack south-west of Montauban, the Battalion's advance was 'not so easy', although several features were captured, among them "Mine Trench", "Mine Support" and "Bund Support". Casualties amounted to 385 men (See Westlake's British Battalions on the Somme).
