A few of these Medals are believed to have been given for the capture of Gibraltar, which took place between 21-24.7.1704, and its subsequent defence against French and Spanish attempts of re-capture over the rest of that year and 1705. However, it is more likely to be of a commemorative nature, its striking also heralded by the devastating engagement fought between the British Fleet under Sir George Rooke, and the French, under Prince Louis de Bourdon, Comte de Toulouse.
