Lot Essay

Private John Sanders served in Captain Hamilton's No. 4 Troop, in the Waterloo Campaign.

The 23rd Light Dragoons, commanded by Lieutenant-Colonel The Earl of Portarlington, formed part of the 3rd Cavalry Brigade under Major-General Sir William Dornberg. On 17.6.1815 they served in the Rear Guard in the retreat from Quatre Bras to Genappe and thence to Waterloo, where they were posted on the Allied right near the Nivelle Road. During the Battle they were involved in counter-charging the French Cavalry attacks and then late in the day the survivors were placed in the Allied centre with the Household Brigade of Cavalry. Out of a unit strength of 387 men, the 23rd Light Dragoons sustained casualties of 79 killed, wounded or missing.
