Lot Essay

Lieutenant-Commander George Lingley Porter was a Merchant Navy man who was promoted directly to the rank of Lieutenant-Commander in January 1915. Appointed Captain of H.M.S. Brighton in July of the same year, he was Mentioned in Despatches for 'good services whilst employed on transport duties in the Dardanelles 1915-16' (London Gazette 31.5.1916 refers). Porter was next appointed to the command of the Alouette, in which ship he was still serving at the end of hostilities.
