Lieutenant R.V. Martyn first went into action in Gallipoli, arriving in that Theatre of War as a Lieutenant in the Welsh Regiment in early October 1915. Although his P.R.O. MIC entry lists him as an Officer of the 2nd Battalion, he must have been attached to either the 1/4th, 1/5th or 8th Battalions, all of whom took heavy casualties. Sometime thereafter transferring to the Coldstream Guards, Martyn was Mentioned in Despatches by Sir Douglas Haig for services in France (London Gazette 8.7.1919 refers).
