Lot Essay

Sold with an interesting photograph album, which contains picture postcards and original snapshots, the whole largely stemming from the recipient's time aboard H.M.S. Birmingham, subject matter including a visit to the River Plate.

The Cruiser Birmingham was employed on the China Station and Home Station between 1939-41, but became the Flagship of the South Atlantic Squadron in June of the latter year. No doubt the recipient was aboard her at this time and, with a Burma Star, went on to witness her commission in the 4th Cruiser Squadron, Eastern Fleet, between 1942-43.
