Private William Robert Brodie was born in Roodepoort in September 1916 and enlisted in the South African Forces at Krugersdorp in August 1940. Posted to an active service unit in North Africa in mid-1941, he was attached to No. 10 S.A. Field Ambulance, S.A.M.C. but, like so many others, was taken P.O.W. at Tobruk on 23.11.1941. Brodie survived his time as a prisoner in Germany and returned home to be discharged in December 1945.
