Sold with original framed Roosevelt Memorial Document, officially inscribed to 'Private Jack H. Feldman, A.S. No.13027061, who died in the service of his country at Hickam Field, Territory of Hawaii, December 7, 1941'.
Private Jack H. Feldman, assigned to the 22nd Material Squadron, Army Air Force, was one of 182 men killed at Hickam Field in the initial Japanese attack on Pearl Harbour and other U.S. military bases on Hawaii. He is listed amongst the first Jewish-American servicemen to die in the Second World War. Feldman, from Philadelphia, was aged 19 at the time of his death.
The number '312448' on the Purple Heart indicates that it was from a contract to the Rex Products Company dated July 1942. At the time of Pearl Harbour, the Medal was awarded for 'military merit' and could not be awarded posthumously. Changes to the regulations permitting posthumous awards were enacted by the Army in April 1942 and it is believed that retrospective awards to those killed or wounded at the time of Pearl Harbour would have commenced in mid to late 1943.
