M.M. London Gazette 22.6.1944. Recommendation states 'On 2 April 1944, when on patrol from the Comma position South-West of Buthidaug, Naik Sarawan Singh took part in a bayonet charge against the enemy. During the fierce hand to hand fighting that ensued, he killed at least three of the enemy and wounded several more though wounded himself. He also seized hold of the barrel of a L.M.G. which was firing on our troops and killed the enemy manning it and brought it back with him. His determination to close with the enemy, dash and complete disregard for his own personal safety, were an inspiration to everyone'.
Naik Sarawan Singh, M.M., a Sikh Jat from the District of Jullunder, was serving with the 5th Battalion, 16th Punjab Regiment at the time of the above action in the Arakan. Originally recommended for an immediate I.D.S.M., his award was changed to a M.M. by the General Officer Commanding 26 Indian Division.
