B.E.M. London Gazette 16.8.1940 'For good services in the withdrawal of the Allied Armies from the beaches of Dunkirk'.
Sick Berth Petty Officer Cecil Ernest Jelley, B.E.M., was recommended for the above award in respect of the following services:
'This S.B.P.O. was a tower of strength throughout the operations. His zeal and devotion to duty, his indefatigable energy, and quick thinking, were invaluable, whilst his cheerful leadership was an example to all'.
Very probably he was seconded for special duties from H.M.S. Lynx, the Naval Base at Dover, although whether in a land-based or seagoing capacity remains unknown. He was invested with his B.E.M. at Buckingham Palace on 8.3.1941.
