Air Commodore John Swire Griffiths, C.B., C.B.E., was born in June 1894 and completed his education at the County Technical College, Carmarthenshire and the University of London. During the Great War he served with the Welch Regiment and Royal Fusiliers and was present at the landings in Suvla Bay and in subsequent operations in Gallipoli in which he was wounded. Afterwards employed in the Western Desert and in Palestine, he finished the War as a Staff Captain in 159th Brigade. Griffiths transferred to the Royal Air Force in the course of 1922 and held appointments in Iraq and Aden between the Wars. The renewal of hostilities witnessed his transferral to Army Co-Operation Command and between 1942-45 he served in India and South-East Asia. Latterly a Service Accountant, he was advanced to Air Commodore in 1943, awarded the C.B.E. in 1944 and the C.B. in 1948. Griffiths retired in 1952 and died in August 1969.
