Lot Essay

After the death of Sir Julius Wernher in 1912, his widow Alice (1862-1945) remarried Lord Ludlow. Lady Ludlow continued to live at Bath House, Piccadilly, and many objects from the Wernher collection there bear her label. It is probably only coincidence, but the collection at Bath House, and subsequently at Luton Hoo, contained one of the finest 18th Century mahogany chairback settees, which was sold in Sotheby's Luton Hoo sale, 24-25 May 1995, lot 31, and is now in a distinguished private collection.
